ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious lethal infection that has successfully spread all across the world. The novel coronavirus that is behind the menace and spread of COVID-19, is the next in the lineage of the Coronaviridae family of viruses, which had previously given two deadly viruses with limited geographical extent. After sustaining for more than two years, the virus is still active and keeps on mutating to evade human immunity. The impact of COVID-19 is felt not only by patients of COVID-19 who go through the trauma but also by non-COVID-19 patients due to the non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) enforced. Patients in the orthopedic departments suffered a huge blow as their rehabilitation practices were stalled due to a lack of health professionals and also restrictions imposed. But to soften the blow, usage of telemedicine was done in some instances so that the essential therapies can continue despite the movement restrictions imposed. COVID-19 has disrupted many aspects of human life including clinical practices and this endeavor is to review those aspects and provide conclusions if any. The aim of the study is to review the available resources regarding Indoor orthopedic practice during the COVID-19 pandemic and draw a conclusion that can help further research on the aforementioned topic.

ABSTRACT

This study applies time-series analysis to observe investor sentiment in the tourism stock market. We infer that investor sentiment positively affects the capital flows to illustrate the behavioral finance in the tourism stock market. The vector autoregression and autoregressive-moving-average models of time-series analysis are adopted to analyze individual and overall capital flows of herding behavior. The empirical study collected quarterly data on 45 tourism-related stocks in China from 2018 to 2020. Results reaffirm that investor sentiment causes irrational investment and strong fluctuations of capital flows, including those during the Coronavirus 2019 pandemic. In practice, the overreaction of tourism-related stocks is discovered in the tourism market that requires long-term resilience. Theoretically, the rational capital asset pricing model needs adjustments with the sentiment factor based on behavioral finance theory. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 cripples the restaurant industry as a crucial socioeconomic sector that contributes immensely to the global economy. However, what the current literature less explored is to quantify the effect of COVID-19 on restaurant visitation and revenue at different spatial scales, as well as its relationship with the neighborhood characteristics of customers' origins. Based on the Point of Interest (POI) measures derived from SafeGraph data providing mobility records of 45 million cell phone users in the US, our study takes Lower Manhattan, New York City, as the pilot study, and aims to examine 1) the change of restaurant visitations and revenue in the period prior to and after the COVID-19 outbreak, 2) the areas where restaurant customers live, and 3) the association between the neighborhood characteristics of these areas and lost customers. By doing so, we provide a geographic information system-based analytical framework integrating the big data mining, web crawling techniques, and spatial-economic modelling. Our analytical framework can be implemented to estimate the broader effect of COVID-19 on other industries and can be augmented in a financially monitoring manner in response to future pandemics or public emergencies.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic altered healthcare delivery in the United States. This study examined the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiological trends and outcomes of gastrointestinal bleeding. We compared the admission rate, in-hospital mortality rate, and mean length of hospital stay between 2019 and 2020 to estimate the pandemic effect. The study highlighted disparities in outcomes of gastrointestinal bleeding hospitalizations stratified by sex and race. We noted a 9.5% reduction in the total number of hospitalizations in 2020. We also observed a 13% increase in overall mortality during the pandemic (P < 0.001). There was a 15.8% increase in mortality among men (P = 0.007), compared to a 4.7% increase among women (P = 0.059). There was a significant increase in mortality among Whites in 2020 compared to Black and Hispanic populations. On multivariable logistic regression, admission during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased length of stay when adjusted for age, sex, and race. Despite the direct COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality, the so-called indirect effect of the pandemic cannot be overlooked. For the remainder of the pandemic and future health emergencies, it is critical to balance mitigation of the spread of the contagion with clear public health messages to not neglect other life-threatening emergencies.

ABSTRACT

The changing shopping habits gained speed with the Covid-19 pandemic and online shopping sites started to be used more. The application development process has gained momentum and web interface designs have tended to keep individuals staying at home in quarantine more on the screen and to shop more. The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on consumers' shopping habits was examined within the scope of this research. For this purpose, university students were taken as a sample and a survey was developed to understand the impact of the pandemic. The research was carried out with the participation of 257 people in total. The questionnaire was administered online via e-mail and social media. Survey questions, along with questions containing demographic features, include hedonistic behavior developed by Babin, Darden and Griffin (Babin et al., 1994), impulsive behavior developed by Rook and Fisher (Rook and Fisher, 1995), and social media and advertising questions developed by us. The data obtained from the questionnaire containing 5-point Likert type questions were evaluated in statistical package programs. According to the results of the research obtained by the interpretation and evaluation of the data;the Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the shopping habits of consumers in the sample of university students. 85.3% of the participants stated that they used online shopping sites during the pandemic. The basic need, food shopping (23%) has left its place to clothing with 34.2%. While there was a great increase in online food shopping, which was the basic need at the beginning of the pandemic, it was seen that clothing shopping came to the fore in the following period. As a result, it has been seen that there has been a great change in people's consumption shopping methods compared to the period before the pandemic, and the pandemic has affected the growth of online shopping with great acceleration. ABSTRACT

This study investigates online exams of online language courses at a distance education center of a public university in Turkey. Causal comparative research design was followed to examine issues in online language courses with the aim to better develop online exams. Participants were 105 students from spring semester of 2019 and 116 students from spring semester of 2020 from six different programs at associate degree level at a public university. The overall findings indicated that there were varied results in unproctored online exams (UOE) of online Turkish (written and verbal expression) and English (grammar) language courses. Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were observed in an unproctored online final exam for the English language course. However, tests showed that there was a high reliability when they were administered in different years to similar conditions and groups of students. As an online exam platform, Moodle LMS was used. Students of Computer Programming and Justice programs in online language courses had greater achievement results when compared to other educational programs whether online or paper-based and proctored or unprocotored exams were conducted. Although gender did not play a vital role in achievement results in general, it was highly influential in the unproctored online English final exam in favor of male students. © 2021 29th International Conference on Computers in Education Conference, ICCE 2021 - Proceedings.
